We had a great lab retreat last weekend. Most years, we try to find a cabin or big house in the middle of nowhere and all drive up and spend the weekend together. Usually, we eat, hike, talk science & careers, and relax. It's something we all look forward to. This year was a little bittersweet as a many are soon leaving the lab, and this will be final retreat for a while. We decided to go a little further and head to Mount Zion in Utah this year. The picture above was after our first big hike on the first day (my kids made it 8 miles there and back!).
On the way back, we hit Vegas traffic and we all got delayed. Joyce, who's last day was Friday, wrote the following poem on her reflection on the weekend. We will miss her, but it's a nice parting tribute to how awesome lab retreats are. I asked for her permission to post it below.
Retreat to Zion – By Joyce Samson
We are driving out now,
The downy snow falling on us
Four days in Zion
They felt
Like markings in time,
Moments of punctuation
The last night peppered
With lightning strike
Exclamations,
The thunder claps
An ovation for all--
All that has been overcome
All that has been accomplished
The hail pelting the tall glass windows
Like strict dots at the end of a sentence
But soon, they softened
to raindrop commas,
Reminding us
To only pause--
We’re just at another beginning
Those rainy showers were for us
We’ll use them to create
Curving streams of questions,
Asking—what’s around the bend?
We’ll use them, these rushing streams
To carve out our own passes
Our own impressive canyons
To carve out
Pages and chapters
And whole volumes
Each on our own narrative
And now
We drive out,
The downy snow falling on us
Spotless blank page
Eager for our tracks
As our old road branches off
To so many places
And one day we’ll meet
At a zenith
We’ll gaze at our views
And we’ll stand atop
Our Zion
